Accra, Ghana – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has officially launched Ghana’s new chip-embedded biometric passport, marking a significant milestone in the country’s adoption of advanced travel document technology. The unveiling ceremony took place at the Passport Office headquarters in Accra, where symbolic copies were presented to key government officials, including Chief of Staff Julius Debrah.

The introduction of this long-awaited passport comes after a decade of development and is designed to meet international civil aviation standards. The upgraded passport incorporates a secure microprocessor chip that stores the holder’s biometric data and photographic information, significantly enhancing document security and reducing the risk of forgery.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, speaking at the launch, emphasized the innovation’s role in strengthening national identity systems and improving service delivery. He announced that the e-passport will be fully integrated with the National Identification Authority’s database, enabling seamless and comprehensive identity verification.

As part of the government’s broader 24-Hour Economy initiative, all passport offices across the country will now operate on shift systems to provide continuous service. Standard applications will be processed within 15 working days, while expedited services will be available within 24 hours.

The Ministry has also partnered with Ghana Post to ensure efficient and accessible document delivery. “To ensure seamless delivery, we’re offering free home delivery services through Ghana Post,” Minister Ablakwa stated. “Applicants with address challenges may collect their documents at designated post offices.”

In addition to its enhanced functionality, the new e-passport is cost-effective for both the government and applicants. It features advanced anti-fraud mechanisms, including a combination of latent and patent security indicators, offering citizens a more secure and internationally recognized travel document.
The launch was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations) Stanislav Dogbe, Minister of Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations Sam George, MP for Cape Coast South Kweku George Ricketts-Hagan, Managing Director of Ghana Post Rita Sraha, MP for Ablekuma South Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, and Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry reaffirmed that this passport upgrade reflects Ghana’s commitment to embracing cutting-edge technology while prioritizing convenience and security for its citizens.
