The 2024 general election is underway nationwide, marking a pivotal moment for Ghana’s political landscape. While some Members of Parliament (MPs) decided not to contest, others were defeated in parliamentary primaries held by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The next Parliament, which begins on January 7, 2025, will include a mix of familiar faces and new entrants. However, over 60 sitting MPs will not return, either by choice or due to losses during party primaries.


NPP MPs Who Opted Out of the Race

A total of 18 NPP MPs announced their decision to step away from Parliament before the party’s primaries in 2023 and 2024. These include:

  • Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu (Suame)
  • Joe Osei Owusu (Bekwai)
  • Atta Akyea (Abuakwa South)
  • Joe Ghartey (Essikado Ketan)
  • Ken Agyapong (Assin Central)
  • Dan Botwe (Okere)
  • Kwasi Amoako-Atta (Atiwa West)
  • Dr. Kwaku Afriyie (Sefwi Wiaso)
  • Emmanuel Marfo (Oforikrom)
  • Benito Owusu-Bio (Atwima Nwabiagya)
  • Carlos Ahenkora (Tema West)
  • Nana Kwasi Adjei Boateng (New Juabeng North)
  • William Owuraku Aidoo (Afigya Kwabre South)
  • Johnson Adu (Ahafo Ano South West)
  • Francis Manu-Adabor (Ahafo Ano South-East)
  • Suleman Sanid (Ahafo Ano North)
  • Kojo Kum (Ahanta West)
  • Francisca Oteng (Kwabre East)

NDC MPs Who Opted Out of the Race

Similarly, four NDC MPs opted out of the election. They are:

  1. Thomas Dalu – Chiana-Paga
  2. Sampson Tangobu Chirigia – Navrongo Central
  3. Albert Akuka Alalzuuga – Garu
  4. Edward Bawa – Bongo

NPP MPs Who Lost During Primaries

After the NPP primaries in January 2024, 28 additional MPs lost their bids for re-election. These include:

  • Tano North: Freda Prempeh
  • Atwima Mponua: Isaac Kwame Asiamah
  • Atwima Nwabiagya South: Emmanuel Agyei Anhwere
  • Bosome Freho: Akwasi Darko Boateng
  • Juaben: Ama Pomaa Boateng
  • Manso Nkwanta: George Kwabena Obeng Takyi
  • Odotobri: Emmanuel Akwasi Gyamfi
  • Offinso North: Ntim Augustine Collins
  • Subin: Eugene Boakye Antwi
  • Dome Kwabenya: Sarah Adwoa Safo
  • Ablekuma North: Sheila Bartels
  • Amasaman: Akwasi Owusu Afrifa-Mensah
  • Tema Central: Yves Hanson-Nortey

In the NDC camp, 16 MPs failed to secure their seats in the primaries:

  • Kwabena Donkor – Pru East
  • ABA Fuseini – Sagnarigu
  • Thomas Dalu – Chiana-Paga
  • Samson Tangombu Chiragia – Navrongo Central
  • Edward Bawa – Bongo
  • Alex Adomako – Sekyere Afram Plains
  • Wisdom Gidisu – Krachi East
  • Abeiku Crentsil – Ekumfi
  • Albert Akuka Alalzuuga – Garu
  • Della Sowah – Kpando
  • Augustine Tawia – Bia West
  • Angela Oforiwa Alorwu-Tay – Afadjato South
  • Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah – Amenfi Central
  • Christian Otuteye – Sege
  • Kwabena Woyome – South Tongu
  • Sophia Ackuaku – Currently MP for Domeabra-Obom, but switched to Ayawaso Central

MPs Running as Independent Candidates

Three MPs who lost their primaries are running as independent candidates:

  • Cynthia Morrison – Agona West
  • Kwadwo Asante – Suhum
  • Peter Kwakye Ackah – Amenfi Central

This significant turnover in Parliament reflects ongoing shifts in Ghana’s political dynamics ahead of the 2024 elections.
