The National Communications Authority, after several banter and misunderstanding, as to whether to give all Ghanaians home and abroad the power to be able to access what mobile phone numbers are connected to their National ID card have finally respected and honoured the wish of all Ghanaians.
A few weeks ago, a video raising concerns whether Ghanaians have checked the authenticity of phone numbers linked to their Ghana Card started a conversation on almost every social media platform. In the video, Journalist, Presenter and Broadcaster Kofi Adoma of Kofi TV fame asked all Ghanaians if they had gone to the offices of MTN, Vodafone or AirtelTigo to verify if the numbers they intended to link to their National ID cards is actually what had been linked? he claimed some people had gone to the offices of these networks, only for their staff members to refuse them. All they wanted was to check if the information linked to their Ghana Card was correct.
Later, in a press release, Ghana’s current Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful assured Ghanaians that her ministry will handle the issue and even suggested that Ghanaians might be charged for checking or verifying if the right numbers are linked to their Ghana Card. In the end, Ghanaians and some media houses in one accord rejected this suggestion.
Now the good news is that NCA has granted this wish in partnership with all Telecommunication companies. This is accessible via a short code. Kudos to the NCA, but this had been long in coming.
Some charlatans who really wanted to cheat and impersonate genuine citizens have shot themselves in the foot. It’s now possible to delink all fraudulent numbers that might have been deliberately registered to your Ghana card.
Team mcBLOG therefore encourage all Ghanaians to quickly check this by dialing *402*1# and follow the prompts to check if really the mobile phone numbers or SIM cards connected to their National Identity cards are indeed what they are supposed to be.
